"In this industry, each job is a learning experience!" says 12News anchor, Kevin MacDowell. Kevin would know because he's been in the television business for over 20 years.
Kevin grew up in California but his wife is from the Erie area and that is one of the reasons Kevin came here, to be near family and to work for WICU 12. Kevin graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Communications and Political Science. He worked at the campus radio station, "just for fun" and found out he really enjoyed it, especially writing for the news. He went into T.V. because he liked the challenges of dealing with something new and different everyday!
During Kevin's career he has worked with many different styles of news organizations. In Minneapolis, the emphasis was in-depth investigations and in Miami he specialized in breaking news stories and doing the news LIVE in the community. At 12News, Kevin is able to combine both styles and he loves it. For Kevin the most important aspect of his job is providing the whole story. "It's important to provide information which is timely and accurate and it's important to put the information into context. Facts mean nothing unless the audience understands why they're important."
Kevin loves being in Erie so he can be close to his relatives and being, most recently, from Miami, he especially enjoys the changing seasons. Kevin and his wife have two children, daughter Emily and son Conor.
One thing about himself that Kevin thinks viewers would be surprised to know about him is that he is an avid surfer. "I used to get up every morning before high school to go surfing."
You can see Kevin every weeknight on 12News at 5, 6 & 11. Kevin is one of the reasons 12News is coverage you can count on!
