Yesterday evening Erie police responded to a 9-1-1 call from someone claiming that his roommate had been stabbed, what they would soon find out, is that the person who made the emergency call, 38 year old Robert Duval had just killed his roommate, 51-year old John Mares.
"Approximately at 8:30 in the evening our patrol officers did respond to 300 block of West 17th street for a reported stabbing victim. Upon arrival they did locate and identify they had a victim and he was deceased at that time," said Erie Police Detective Paul Bizzarro.
Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook ruled the death a homicide due to a stab wound to the chest.
Police recovered a knife from the scene that was used by Duval to stab Mares directly in the heart inside of the apartment that they shared on West 17th street.
"They shared the apartment for approximately 7 months. They moved in, in October," said Bizzarro.
Police are unsure at this time what provoked him to stab Mares. District Attorney Jack Daneri says that there were reports that people could hear arguing coming from inside of the apartment before the incident.
"That's something we're trying to identify right now, we're still talking with witnesses and relatives," added Bizzarro.
Duval, who is a registered sex offender, due to a felony charge of sexual assault back in 1994, was arraigned early this morning on charges of criminal homicide and possessing instruments of crime.
Erie Police Detectives say the investigation is ongoing in hopes to uncover details of what led to the stabbing.
