The Erie Port Authority may be moving.
The authority today approved hiring an architect to look at renovations needed to move to the vacant Cruise Boat Terminal on the bayfront. The authority owns that building.
It has been in the Intermodal Center for the past 10 years, paying a small rental fee, while managing the facility for EMTA and paying all the upkeep and utilities. The deal expires at the end of this year, and the port authority may not renew it.
Ray Schreckengost, Executive Director of the Erie Port Authority said, "The management agreement here, we don't make any money on. We lose money. If we don't have a management agreement, obviously we would have to pay rent. The rent here is $18-20 per square foot. When we have our own building that we already own, we can renovate it for $3-4 per square foot."
The authority is expected to make a decision on a move in the next few months.
