Erie Diocese Reaches out to Deaf Community

Posted: Updated:

Feeling a part of the community is an important aspect of any faith, but for members of the church whose hearing is compromised, being fully involved can be difficult.

That's why the Diocese of Erie planned a special retreat for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The retreat, called "Knowing and Doing God's Will", preached a message of identifying individual gifts, and using them to benefit the community.

It included mass and a lunch before the afternoon retreat session for sharing and reflection, and concluded with a dinner.

Father Tom Coughlin was the first deaf priest in North America, and he traveled from San Antonio, Texas to be a part of the experience at Blessed Sacrament Church.

He signed the mass along with another priest who said the mass, and he signed the homily, with an interpreter speaking along.

Father Coughlin's hearing presented challenges on his journey to becoming a priest, but overcoming the obstacles fueled his passion to help others in his position.

He's traveled the country as a missionary, and he founded a seminary for men with hearing loss who wanted to become priests.

There are now ten deaf priests in the country, speaking the word of God in a new way.
