Erie County Council gave the green light today for a Pleasant Ridge Manor West upgrade.
It voted to approve the borrowing of $2.2 million dollars. The money will come from the gaming revenue fund and will pay for a sprinkler system.
The system must be installed by July 2013 to meet new federal regulations at Pleasant Ridge West. The county had planned to pay for the sprinklers by selling 88 nursing home bed licenses to the company that operates LECOM. However, that sale was denied by the state.
The loan from the gaming revenue fund could be vetoed by county executive Barry Grossman. He wants the county to get out of the nursing home business.
"This will come down as an ordinance to be acted upon," said Phil Fatica, Erie County Council president. "Ordinances do deal with money. So, he would have to certify this. That's where we're going to see what happens next."
Council believes it has enough votes to override a veto, if that vote does take place.
