The president of Penn State University has ordered the removal of the 900 pound bronze statue of former coach Joe Paterno.
President Rodney Erickson says in a statement that the statue was ordered removed and is now in a "secure location."
The campus library will continue to bear Paterno's name, a name that was included prominently in a scathing report of how the university handled the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal.
The Paterno family also released a statement, saying that removing the statue will do nothing to help the victims of Sandusky or the healing of the community.
The action comes just one day before a planned Monday press conference where the NCAA will announce what sanctions it will take against the Penn State athletic programs.
Workers roped off the statue area and covered the statue with a tarp before moving it to its storage location. The work drew a small group of students who watched as the statue was moved.
