It's quite an honor to be named to CNN/Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live." The magazine lists only 100 communities in the country. Millcreek has received the honor for the second year in a row.
"It says a lot for Millcreek Township. It says a lot for the school district, the police department, the leadership, and I think it's Erie County as a whole, as what we do together, to make the community a great place to live," said Millcreek Supervisor Joe Kujawa.
John Oliver, President of VisitErie, says Millcreek's recognition in a national magazine should benefit the entire region.
"It can't help but increase the visibility and desirability on either living here, developing a business, or visiting as a tourist," he said.
Both years, the magazine pointed out that Millcreek is the gateway to Presque Isle, and mentioned the beaches, the hiking and biking trails, and the bird watching. It also pointed out that the township ranks favorably in student test scores, crime rate, and home prices.
One resident is not surprised Millcreek, once again, made the list.
"It's the friendly atmosphere," says Joanna Bush, "but also the housing is so reasonable, compared to other places. The cost of living is amazing. It's just a great place to live."
Last year, Millcreek was 79th on the CNN/Money Magazine list. This year it's 95th. Kujawa believes he knows why the township dropped.
"I think that the #1 reason we kind of fell was job location. You got Bush Industries that left. You've got Lord now making a change. All that plays into a factor. But just making it to the Top 100 is a big honor," he said.
The rankings come at a time Millcreek is divided over whether it should change its form of government. Kujawa, who is against any changes, couldn't help but say that Millcreek must be doing something right.
