It looked like an airplane crash and fire today at Erie International Airport. But it was just a very realistic drill.
Airport firefighters from Erie, Bradford, Frankilin and Jamestown, New York all worked to improve their skills. They battled heat and propane flames to drag mannequins out of a simulator resembling a passenger jet. The simulator and it's crew come from Michigan.
The drill is required by the FAA. And firefighters say it is valuable because it is so realistic.
Erie International Airport Fire Chief Rick Robie said, "Oh this is phenomenal because you don't get a chance to actually work on an aircraft. So by having this simulator here it allows you to get the hands-on of what you would actually see inside of an aircraft or the exterior of one."
Airports also must do a full-scale disaster drill once every 3 years.
