"Business built with a social mission", that's principle around which Michael Hooks built his hair salon.
He's been holding true to that statement for the past seven years, with his annual back-to- school free hair cut event.
"It means everything to me to be able to help out," Hooks said. At a time when the nation is feeling an economic pinch, he's glad he can do something for people in his own community.
The salon set up shop on the grounds of Pfeiffer-Burleigh School this Saturday, on East 11th street.
Hair cuts weren't the only thing Hooks was giving away for free though. He also had backpacks fully loaded with school supplies free for the taking.
With food and festival- like activities to go along with the cuts, parents brought their kids for both function and fun.
Toddler or teen, you were welcomed into a chair for free service.
Lori Burrows will be a Junior at East High School, and this was the last thing on her checklist to start the school year off right.
"I just wanna be confident," she said, "it's a brand new start."
Volunteers had a lot on their hands with almost 1000 heads of hair to cut, but one stylist didn't mind the rush. Yohaira Torres said she likes working with people, and with two children of her own she knows how to handle the kids.
The response to the event grows every year, and Hooks plans to continue this service to the Erie community for years to come.
