Fire destroyed an Indian food restaurant in Millcreek. Crews were called to Raj Mahal on West 12th Street near Peninsula Drive about 3:30 PM Saturday. The first units on the scene saw flames shooting from the roof and heavy smoke inside the restaurant. They called for more help from neighboring fire companies. It took nearly two hours to get the fire under control.
At one point the fire chief in command at the scene, ordered all firefighters inside the building to come out, because the smoke was so heavy. Dispatchers say employees at the restaurant reported the fire. Crews stretched hoses all over the neighborhood to get to reach hydrants. They stopped traffic on side streets so cars would not driver over hoses. An hour into the firefight, the smoke became so thick, police had to shut down traffic on busy West 12th Street.
Ambulance crews transported two firefighters to be treated for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. A fire investigator was called in to search for what caused the fire. Crews were expected to use a backhoe to knock down what remains of the building.
