Incumbent Republican Congressman Glenn Thompson has been busy getting to know local voters. Because of re-districting, a portion of Erie County is becoming part of the sprawling 5th Congressional District. Thompson promises not to be a stranger. He said, "I've been in Erie County probably an average of a minimum of one day a week."
Wherever he goes, Thompson says he hears the same thing, creating and retaining jobs is the top issue on the minds of voters. He says government needs to do more to help business. Some of his priorities include lower taxes and less regulation.
On health care, he is no fan of the Affordable Health Care Act, better known as Obamacare. He thinks it gives government too much control and will drive up costs.
Thompson was re-elected to his second term in 2010 with nearly 70% of the vote. He is being opposed by Democrat Charles Dumas, a professor at Penn State University.
