Crews working on the massive renovations at the downtown Erie Insurance Arena are racing to have the complex ready to re-open in less than a month.
They are now working 2 shifts a day to have the complex ready for concerts, hockey and basketball. It has been closed since May. And it will close again next summer for the final phase of the project.
Work will continue even after the arena re-opens in early October, with a giant tarp wall put up to seal off the construction area and seal out the cold. And patrons will be restricted to one side of the building or the other during events for safety reasons.
The Executive Director of the Erie County Convention Center Authority, Casey Wells said, "Quite candidly we are going to have some temporary inconvenience this season for the spectacular improvements that will occur in the fall of 2013."
Some of the major improvements include more seating and restrooms, new luxury suites, improved heating and air conditioning and a state-of-the-art ice making system.
