Organizers are hoping for up to 2,000 volunteers for this month's 10th annual Lake Erie Coastal Cleanup. The September 15th cleanup will focus on Presquie Isle and 15 other sites, mostly along the Lake Erie shoreline.
Since the event began in 2003, more than 8100 volunteers have collected about 57 tons of trash and debris. And this year the event will expand to include Elk Creek in McKean and Mallory Run in Edinboro.
Event Coordinator Don Benczkowski said, "Our goal was to expand in an effort to give those folks an idea of what it is like, not only to participate in a cleanup but to see exactly how much stuff is out there, to see how much trash is in your neighborhood that maybe you are not even aware of."
Some of the most common items collected include cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beverage containers.
