A celebration at Presque Isle Monday night honored the 199th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie.
Erie history isn't often taught in classrooms, but our port city is home to naval heroes who overcame odds to beat the British, a world power.
"That's what gives us our identity," said Dr. Allan Belovarac of Mercyhurst University. He said that's why it's important for people to understand and appreciate the history of our area.
People gathered at Perry Monument to remember the accomplishments of Perry and his crew, with songs by the Lake Erie Sound Quartet, speakers, and a traditional cannon salute.
The battles fought in our area almost 200 years ago set the foundation for the Navy today. Admiral Greg Nosal of the U.S. Navy said in his speech that there are many direct traits between Perry's navy and the U.S. forces, and that their accomplishments lead us to where we are today.
The Perry Monument was an easy choice for the location of the event; it's surrounded by historic sites where Perry and his crew prepared for war.
The free event was hosted by the Erie Maritime Museum and the Flagship Niagara League.
