The fourth annual Allegheny River cleanup is now underway in Warren County. More than 300 volunteers are helping to cleanup a 40-mile stretch of the river downstream from the Kinzua Dam.
Today they focused on an 8-mile stretch of river near Tidioute. Forty volunteers were out on the water today, working in pairs.
Some teams paddled in to shore to drop off the items they found. Others transferred their loads of trash onto a power boat and continued downstream. Metal, glass, and aluminum items will be recycled. The trash will be hauled away to a landfill.
Organizers say the cleanup is a lot of work. But they are willing to get wet and dirty to cleanup the river.
Volunteer Dick Klancher said, "So many times you have communities that talk about doing stuff. We are proving this is a community that does something about the problem."
The cleanup began Saturday with volunteers working on both Brokenstraw Creek and Connewango Creek. The river cleanup continus through Saturday.
