It was a day for cadets at the Mercyhurst-North East Police Academy to "feel the pain." The 35 cadets all voluntarily were shocked by tasers.
Some of the cadets just gritted their teeth and collapsed onto the mats. Some yelled and screamed. And quite a few used some colorful language as they were jolted by 50,000 volts of electricity.
Instructors fired off the probes, with other students "spotting" or holding the cadets to ease them onto the floor, then practice arresting them.
Instructors say the experience helps the cadets bond as a team. It also shows them how it feels to be shocked by a taser. And gives them an insight that could help them testify in court if they become police officers. But that's the future. Today it was all about enduring the brief but intense pain.
Cadet Kayla Slivinski said, "It is an experience you are not going to forget."
Cadet Brandon Magee said, "You don't know what to expect. Then you can't do anything. It feels like getting stung by a thousand bees at once."
