It's only early October. But local PennDOT crews area already thinking about snow.
In fact, this week they are starting their annual month long work to have everything in place for winter. Today they were busy mounting brine tanks on the rear of some of the 45 trucks used on Erie County roads.
They also have to put on salt spreaders then mount plow blades. All the trucks must be ready by the end of this month.
Meantime, a stockpile of nearly 25,000 tons of salt is already in place. Crews say although they focus on getting ready during October, it really takes a lot longer to prepare for winter.
PennDOT Garage Supervisor Mike Roesch said, "Well our work starts the beginning of May. We refurbish the equipment all summer, spreaders, brine tanks, plows. Winter season at PennDOT never stops."
PennDOT has budgeted $4.7 million for Erie County snow removal this winter.
