SAINT MARTIN -
Tropical Storm Rafael is crossing the Virgin Islands this evening, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
As Tropical Depression Patty weakened into oblivion, just east of the Bahamas, a new tropical storm strengthened over the Lesser Antilles. Tropical Storm Rafael formed late on Friday evening, and this storm has prompted the National Hurricane Center to issue Tropical Storm Warnings for the Virgin Islands, as well as some other nearby vacation destinations. The new tropical storm has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph this Saturday evening, and the storm is passing right between the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Croix. Tropical Storm Force Winds are occurring, as well as torrential rain, in these areas.
In the days ahead, Tropical Storm Rafael may strengthen and it could become a hurricane before it reaches Bermuda. The storm will move north, and it should reach the vicinity of Bermuda on Tuesday.
