NEW YORK -

Hurricane Sandy is a powerful category 2 storm that is tearing a path through the Bahamas, but forecasters say that is just the beginning. Sandy will head north before curving around the Outer Banks of North Carolina. 5-10" of rain and hurricane force wind gusts are possible before the hurricane heads straight to the north.

Normally tropical storms then drift northeast away from the US mainland, but this storm isn't normal. Hurricane Sandy is expected to take a scary left turn which will take it right into the northeast as the storm fuses together with a sharp cold front. The two systems are expected to phase into a powerful hybrid storm that is rarely seen. The storm system is expected to take on characteristics of both a winter storm and a hurricane. This is a scary reminder of the Halloween storm in 1991 that was dubbed the "Perfect Storm". This similar type of set up is now being called "Frankenstorm" by the Hydrometeorolical Prediction Center.

The exact storm track is uncertain, but hurricane force wind gusts could occur over hundreds of miles in the northeast. Flash flooding, coastal erosion, and even snow accumulations are possible with this massive storm. The latest timeline puts the worst of the storm in the northeast part of the country by late on October 30th into Halloween, but storm impacts could linger for a few days.
