The runway extension at Erie International Airport is now officially open. Planes started landing and taking off yesterday, after the Federal Aviation Administration gave it's approval.
The project should mean fewer flight delays and cancellations in the winter, and a safer airport for travelers.
Airport Director Chris Rodgers said, "Now there is a thousand feet available at the end in case it is needed in an emergency. We have a thousand more feet of runway available for us. So when you combine the safety area and the additional runway length, there is a larger margin for safety and that is very important."
Although the extension is now open, crews still have more work to do to totally finish the improvement project by next August. The key work planned for next year is paving the existing runway.
