A violent two car collision in Waterford Township this morning claimed the lives of both drivers. One of the drivers was a mother who had her two young children with her in the car. The accident happened on Flatts road, about 3/4 of a mile south of Route 97.
According to PA State Police investigators, 46 year old Karen Warren Riedel of Corry was heading north on Flatts road, just after 8:30 AM Sunday, when her car, a Ford Focus, crossed the double yellow lines, as she attempted a right hand turn.
Her car hit a southbound car, a Chevy Chevelle, head on. That car was driven by 68 year old Ronald Oberlander of Waterford. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Both cars spun around on impact, one landing up against a guard rail, the other on private property.
Oberlander died at the scene. A rescue helicopter flew Karen Riedel to UPMC Hamot Trauma. She was pronounced dead at the hospital 45 minutes after she arrived.
Her children, ages 8 and 10 were wearing their seatbelts. According to the state police report, they suffered minor injuries. State police say the accident is still under investigation.
