It's definitely a sign of the holiday season. The Salvation Army's annual red kettle campaign is now underway.
Volunteers began ringing their bells today at the Millcreek Mall. In the coming days, the campaign will expand to about 3 dozen locations in our area. The campaign continues until Christmas Eve.
The goal is $190,000. The money will be used to provide food, clothing and toys to about 1500 families over the holidays. And it also helps many other programs run by the Salvation Army all year long.
Major Les Walter said, "The needs have increased. People are coming to us who have never come for help before. Monthly we help over 600 families with food and essentials, trying to help them get through the month. And so many people are sent to us who never dreamed they would be coming to the Salvation Army for help."
The kettle campaign began more than 120 years ago in California.
