It was a very busy day at the Erie City Mission, getting ready for the annual Thanksgiving food basket giveaway on Monday. About 1200 bags filled with food for a holiday meal will be distributed.
Today, volunteers from the YMCA were filling up those bags. Items include frozen turkeys, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing and potatoes. The total value of the food to be handed out is nearly $20,000.
The organization and volunteers know there is clearly a need for the food.
YMCA Volunteer Vicki Stilson said, "There are folks in our community that just do not have the means to purchase the food for their dinners for their families. So we feel good putting these baskets together for them."
Dan Quigley of the Erie City Mission said, "The need is growing for sure."
There is still a need for more frozen turkeys. Donations can be made between 7am-7pm Saturday and Sunday at the Erie City Mission at the 11th and French Street entrance.
