Thanksgiving travel forecast & car tips

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Many of you will be gassing up the car and hitting the roads between now and Thanksgiving.  This time of year, the weather can play a big role in those travel plans.

This year, the weather will cooperate with most of your travel plans, especially for the first half of the extended holiday weekend.  Whether you're heading north, south, east or west, Wednesday will be a mild, bright travel day across Ohio, much of Michigan, and most of our neighboring states.

By Thanksgiving evening, some rain showers will approach the Chicago area, with light snow farther north.

A big part of traveling safe - and smart - goes well beyond knowing the forecast.  A local mechanic reminds us it's important to check the basics, under the hood before you load up and head out.

Jeff Strayer, from Swifty's Service, says, "check the air pressure in your tires, check the oil, and make sure it's good and full.  Also, look at your washer solvent, and make sure that's full.  That's about all you can do for yourself, these days."  Beyond that, routine service is important in getting you where you need to be.

Looking ahead to the typical return trip, on Saturday or Sunday, we'll be in a much colder weather pattern.

Interstates to our south should be dry, under a bright sky.

Meanwhile, some lake-effect snow showers and flurries will be winding down on Saturday, in parts of Michigan, and also to the east of Toledo into upstate New York.

Sunday should be drier for most of the region, but still chilly.
