The Salvation Army in Erie and around the state hopes donations to the annual red kettle campaign start to pick up.
Around Western Pennsylvania, donations are down about $90,000 compared to last year. Locally the campaign is running about $3500 behind 2011.
Leaders think the loss of many retired volunteer bell ringers is a key factor.
The goal of the local campaign is $190,000. The money is used to help thousands of families in need.
Salvation Army Major Les Walter said, "This helps us the whole year. It is not just a Christmas campaign for us. It gets us through the rest of 2012 and 2013, so it is vital to us."
The kettle campaign continues through Christmas eve.
