Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

On November 30, commuter bike manufacturer Linus Bike responds positively to an article published by Press-Citizen.com concerning a bike program in Iowa which helped keep cyclists safe and waive fines.

According to the Press-Citizen.com article, bicycle advocacy group Think Bicycles united with local police departments to provide new bike lights for 28 individuals with fines. The article reports, “In May, cycling advocacy group Think Bicycles of Johnson County launched the Light the Night program. The program aims to get more cyclists to install bike lights for night riding by allowing them to take the citation from police for not having the light to a participating bike shop, buy a bike light and have the fine waived.”
The article explains that a $93.75 fine had been given by Iowa City police officers who had to write citations for cycling without a light. According to the article, of the 31 citations given, 28 cyclists have used the program to install bike lights and have the fines waived.

Jason Latty, national sales manager for [commuter bike distributor Linus bike, applauds the efforts of Think Bicycles. “This advocacy group concocted a clever method to encourage cyclists to install bike lights. The partnership of Think Bicycles of Johnson County with the Iowa City and University of Iowa police departments has promoted bicycle safety in a whole new way. It’s inspiring to know that just unique and smart concepts can truly make a difference for cyclists.”

The article reports that Dan Roth, a cyclist and police officer for Iowa City, explains that with shorter daylight hours, “he anticipates that the number of headlight citations written could increase. He said the cyclists he has spoken with have been fans of the program.” According to the article, Roth was quoted as saying, “I think it’s been a very worthwhile project.”
