The Christmas season is a time to be enjoyed with family and friends, but for the 71 million people caring for Alzheimer’s patients, this time of the year can be stressful and difficult. Many people are already balancing the responsibility of caregiving with everyday life and now have to change their routine and worry about decorating, baking, entertaining and shopping. The added pressure of this time of the year can be very overwhelming.

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) November 30, 2012

The 71 million Alzheimer’s caregivers worldwide caring for over 35 million persons with Alzheimer’s now helps Alzheimer’s patients and provides Alzheimer’s and dementia care through the access to research based information and resources, thanks to the launch of The Alzheimer’s Caregiver™ a new online subscription service series. The Alzheimer’s Caregiver™ translates the most current scientific and clinical Alzheimer “Care” research, in both English and Spanish, into a language and format that family and professional caregivers can put to use. Using internet based technologies, The Alzheimer’s Caregiver™ is an educational program that is interactive and easy to understand, access, and navigate.

To help ease the strain, The Alzheimer’s Caregiver™ offers the following suggestions for enjoying and surviving the holidays:

Even though the holidays are a time for giving; don’t be ashamed to ask for more help from friends, family, and neighbors.

It’s OK to take time for yourself. Consider using a regular respite caregiver to allow for personal time each week so you can manage your holiday to-do list. Finally, make sure you eat properly and get enough sleep during the holiday season.

Make a New Year’s resolution to join an Alzheimer’s support group.

The holidays can be over stimulating and change in routine can be difficult for Alzheimer’s patients. Try to maintain your routine and be attentive to the impact of blinking lights, loud music, big crowds and other large family gatherings.

Recognize that your loved ones will be different this year, and have realistic expectations about what they can do.

Keep or adapt holiday family traditions that are important to you. Include the Alzheimer’s patient as much as possible.

Encourage friends and family to visit. Limit the number of visitors at one time, and try to schedule visits during the time of day when the Alzheimer’s patient is at his or her best.

Dr. Catherine Harris said, "The holidays are a time for reflection and giving thanks. Writing your personal story can be a powerful and therapeutic stress relieving tool for you. Be sure to include the benefits you have gained."

The Alzheimer’s Caregiver™ incorporates a peer-review system for translation of Alzheimer’s care research into an easily understood and well-designed program and training materials including strategies and techniques for family and professional caregivers. The program is delivered in an interactive audio/visual media format that utilizes websites and mobile handheld devices. It also uses adult education and computer based training methods that are helpful and accessible to the widest variety of caregivers worldwide.
