1 person dead, officer hurt in Ohio cruiser crash

WHITEHALL, Ohio (AP) - A police car has been involved in a crash in a Columbus suburb that left one person dead and an officer hospitalized in serious condition.

Whitehall police Sgt. Dan Kelso said the police car was rushing to back up other officers in pursuit of a suspect when it was hit at an intersection at about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Kelso said a person in the other vehicle was killed, and Whitehall Officer Enrique Ortega suffered multiple injuries.

Ortega was backing up other officers chasing a suspect who had threatened his girlfriend and showed up at her house. Kelso said he is still at large.

Whitehall is just east of Columbus.
