WICU-WSEE today obtained an exclusive "first look" at the final report on West Nile Virus in Erie county in 2012. And the numbers confirm it was a bad year.
The Erie County Health Department says the weather provided the perfect environment for the type of mosquitoes that spread the potentially deadly virus.
No one died locally, but one human case was detected. And the number of confirmed cases in birds and mosquitoes was also up from 2011.
Karen Tobin of the Erie County Health Department said, "We've had the most mosquitoes and birds test positive this year since 2002-2003. And this was the first time we have had a human test positive since 2004."
The county will resume it's mosquito control effort early next spring.
