Cleveland police chief wants probe of deadly chase

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND (AP) - Cleveland's police chief says he'll ask the U.S. attorney's office and the FBI to help look into a 5-mile chase that involved dozens of police cars and ended with two people dead.

Police chief Michael McGrath says city leaders want more answers about what happened and whether department policy was followed in the 20-minute chase during which officers fired 137 rounds.

The Plain Dealer reported Saturday that police say the chase began because two people shot at a police officer in downtown Cleveland Thursday night.

The chase then went through two suburbs before officers shot and killed the two suspects near a school.

Authorities say investigators did not find a gun inside the suspects' car when their bodies were from the car Friday evening.
