Massive sinkhole could shut Ohio Route 516 for months

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Ohio (AP) - A sinkhole that consumed part of Ohio Route 516 is being described by the Dover fire chief as about four-football-fields big, and a highway official says he has never seen such a thing.

Officials told WKYC-TV in Cleveland that the collapse has shut down part of the northeastern Ohio road outside Dover for repairs, most likely for several months. No serious injuries were reported.

The hole apparently began forming around Wednesday. Ohio Department of Transportation District 11 Director Lloyd McAdam told the TV station that dredging on the property most likely took away the bottom of the slope and contributed to the cascade of dirt. He said a pond near the road collapsed, leaving the sinkhole.

Traffic was being directed around the road.
