With temperatures soaring to the 60 degree range, Penndot road crews are doing summer work and vehicle maintenance instead of salting roads and plowing snow. The five year snow fall average for Erie County is 102 inches for a winter season. Last winter, Erie County recorded just under 47inches of snow for the season. This year appears to be getting off to a mild start as well.
Penndot Erie County Assistant Manager, Darrell Chapman said, "We've only had four days where our crews were out salting and plowing the roads this season." So far this fall and winter season, only 3.1 inches of snow has been recorded at Erie International Airport. Chapman says the department is not spending on diesel fuel or overtime yet, and there's a huge stockpile of road salt.
It's too early to tell if the mild start will lead to a mild finish. In the 2010 - 2011 season, Erie recorded just an inch and a half of snow by the end of November, but ended the season with 107 inches of snow.
