A downtown Erie Christmas tradition is coming back, with a slightly different twist. Crews were busy today putting up a giant artificial Christmas tree on the State Street side of the Boston Store building.
UPMC Health Plan is spending $25,000 on the custom-made, 36 foot tall tree that comes in sections, and includes 4500 lights. A crane lifted each section into place.
Many people remember the exterior lights that displayed a Christmas tree on the building for decades.
Boo Hagerty of UPMC Health Plan said, "Oh, we hope it brings back great memories. I go back to when I was a kid going to see Santa Claus on the 6th floor here. So I think a lot of us will look at it and think back to the time when the Boston Store was a vibrant downtown store."
UPMC Health Plan will turn on the lights Friday evening, the same time the lights at Perry Square are switched on for the Christmas season.
