Naama Shafir Collects MAC West Division Player of the Week Recognition

CLEVELAND - Senior Naama Shafir was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week by the league office on Monday.

Shafir is receiving this honor for the first time this season and fifth time in her career, the fifth-highest total in school history. The fifth-year guard was selected the inaugural Glass City Tournament MVP over the weekend, averaging a team-high 11.0 ppg and 4.5 apg. The Hoshaya, Israel was the only Rocket to score in double figures in both contests, garnering tourney MVP accolades for a second-straight week.

The Hoshaya, Israel native opened the two-game tourney with 12 points, three dimes and one dime vs. SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Dec. 1. The following afternoon vs. St. Bonaventure in the championship contest, the three-time All-MAC selection contributed 10 points, a game-high six dimes and three boards. With her three helpers against SIUE, Shafir became only the fourth player in school history to tally at least 600 career assists.

Overall in 2012-13, Shafir is averaging a team-high 10.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, a squad-best 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals in a team-high 27.4 minutes per game. The two-time team captain is currently second in the league in helpers and assist/turnover ratio (2.1), tied for 10th in thefts and tied for 18th in scoring.

Shafir and the MAC West Division leading Rockets (6-1) return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 8 when they host Horizon League member Milwaukee. The opening tip against the Panthers is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
