Erie City Council today dealt with a zoning controversy, holding a public hearing on a request to change the zoning on vacant property along Parade Street.
The developers of 36 townhouses or low and moderate income tenants on the west side of Parade Street are requesting that 6 acres of land on the east side of Parade be changed to general commercial zoning. The developers own the property
While council isn't happy there is no concrete plan, critics worry it will mean more low and moderate income housing, an idea they oppose.
Developer Michael Peck said, "We have no specific plan for the property right now. But in our planning we need to know what we can do and what we can't do
Parade Street business owner Bill Matteson said, "It has already been decided in my mind. It will be low income housing. My concern is with it, it will increase vandalism in the area. I can't prove it but feel very strongly that is what is going to happen."
Council is expected to vote on the re-zoning request at a later date.
