Teen holds sign as punishment after stealing mom's car

Posted: Updated:

It's not your typical punishment, but Katrina Bester says it was necessary. The mother was preparing to leave for work Tuesday when she noticed her truck was missing. After spending hours trying to track it down, she realized it was her son who took it. That's when she decided to teach him a lesson in her own way.  Wednesday afternoon, she made 15-year-old Kameron Jones hold a sign that read, "I'm a thief. I stole my mom's truck while she worked."

"He could have been downtown at the juvenile, but we chose to handle it this way," says Bester.  "He did something really silly. He could have hurt someone. He could have killed someone. He doesn't have a license, there's consequences for your actions."

Holding signs as punishment is becoming more common with parents, and even the judicial system.  Last month a judge ordered a Cleveland woman caught speeding by a school bus to hold a sign reading, 'only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk'.

Bester knows her parenting style may not be popular.  "He definitely doesn't want to be out here holding his sign," she comments.

But she is sure it shows she means business.   "I trusted him, I didn't think this would ever happen. I was distraught about it. I was very upset, and today he's upset because he has to do something foolish."
