Flu season has begun here in Erie County, with four confirmed cases reported to the Erie County Health Department.
Last year was the mildest local flu season on record, with just 55 cases. The average is about 700.
But this season is expected to be more severe with a large number of cases already reported in some southern states. The elderly and young are most at risk.
Experts say the best prevention is getting a flu vaccine.
Howard Nadworny, M.D. of Saint Vincent Health Center said, "There are two values in getting vaccinated. One is staying well yourself. The other is to interrupt the spread."
And this year there is plenty of vaccine available.
Char Berringer, R.N. of the Erie County Health Department said, "The good news with vaccine is there is no shortage."
In addition to getting the vaccine, health care professionals say it is a good idea to avoid people who are coughing and sneezing, and wash your hands frequently.
