Some school districts in Erie, Crawford, and Warren Counties might be getting some welcome financial news tonight.
An organization that has been providing services to the districts for 40 years, might take the first step toward distributing millions of dollars back to the districts.
Fees paid to the Northwest Tri County Intermediate Unit have built up over the years. The school districts want those surpluses or hoarded funds back.
One audit put the figure at nearly $12 million. But another audit is underway to pinpoint the exact figure. It is not clear how much each district could receive.
Intermediate Unit Solicitor George Joseph said, "Well I think that can be a difficult process. The Intermediate Unit board has appointed a committee to make a recommendation to them on what would be the fairest approach."
School boards in 15 of the 17 districts served by the unit have already approved the plan to hand back the surplus funds.
