It was an historic occasion today on the campus of Mercyhurst University, the graduation of the 100th class of the school's police academy.
Thirty-three cadets were honored for completing the grueling 780 hours of training. That includes plenty of classroom instruction plus training in self defense, firearms and other skills needed in police work. The course is mandatory to get a job in law enforcement in the state.
Cadet Matt Duell said, "There were a lot of times you wanted to quit and give up. But there is something about being a police officer that you just hop up and go on. It is the biggest challenge I have ever done in my life."
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said, "The type of people that they are putting out from Mercyhurst University I think are the type of people we're looking for. They are dedicated. They want to do the job for the right reasons."
More than 3,000 cadets have graduated from the police academy over the years.
