FAIRBANKS, Alaska -

The snow lovers have been disappointed early this season as the record stretch without measurable snowfall continues. Storm systems have been able to push in moisture but there isn't any arctic air to interact with across the lower 48. So where is all of the cold? Try the north pole...North Pole, Alaska that is. North Pole, Alaska sits just a few miles southeast of Fairbanks. It is home to one of Santa's facilities, the northern lights, and this year extreme cold.

There is already 20" of snowfall on the ground around Fairbanks, which is very unusual even for an area this far north. After all Fairbanks has more of a desert climate. The temperature has been extremely frigid. The warmest temperature for the first week of December was an unbelievable 16 degrees below zero. Overnight lows dropped to 40 below. The month as a whole is running about 11 degrees below normal. Northwest Ohio on the other hand has been about 8 degrees above normal.
