A man who showed a handgun inside the Elm Street Walmart is behind bars, facing several criminal charges. Erie police officers were called to the store about 3:00 PM on Saturday, after a Walmart employee confronted a couple with a backpack, about shoplifting. According to police reports, the man then showed the employee a handgun in that backpack and ran from the store. Police searched the area around the Bayfront Parkway and Broad Street. They found the backpack in a yard at 2523 Kilpatrick Street. In it, they discovered the gun, some stolen items from Walmart and court papers and a pay stub, identifying the owner.
When 22 year old Devon McLaurin returned to the area for that backpack, police arrested him. McLaurin faces charges including robbery, terroristic threats, retail theft, receiving stolen property and carrying a firearm without a license. The female suspect has not been taken into custody.
