Holiday travel can be a headache, but this year will be a little easier for people flying out of Erie International Airport.
"We worked all last winter, last spring, last summer, and this fall we finished on November 7th," said Chris Rodgers, Executive Director of the airport.
A few cancellations and delays in the final stages had some customers concerned.
"All of the instrument landing equipment had to be commissioned... to bring those components online," said Rodgers, but now, he says, there's nothing in their way.
"The great news is... we're two winters ahead of the original schedule," Rodgers said, when it comes to the major improvements planned for the airport.
He said "we minimized the impact as best we could" during the construction period, and now they're ready to get through the holidays.
The runway extension makes it a safer landing strip, which means less delays due to weather.
"There already have been less delays... which is outstanding news, and why this is such a big deal," said Rodgers.
He has a few words of advice to make your holiday travels as smooth as possible: "We always advise everyone to check in from home... and don't wrap your Christmas presents because TSA will have to unwrap them to screen them here."
The last phase of the airport's major improvement project will be repaving the entire runway, which will be finished in August.
