Local Salvation Army workers are now busy gearing up for the agency's annual Christmas food and toy distribution.
The agency gym at 10th and Liberty is now jammed with toys, everything from stuffed animals to board games. The toys are for children age 12 and under. A nearby room is also filled with bags of food. The agency will distribute the food plus gift cards and toys on Thursday and Friday.
Agency leaders say donations help to make the giveaway possible. And while the food is critical, it's the toys that really make Christmas special for hundreds of families.
Salvation Army Major Les Walter said, "The most important thing is the food. But there is nothing better than seeing smile on a child's face on Christmas morning. Many of the parents tell us that their children would get nothing if it were not for the help. So we are grateful e can do that."
The people receiving the food and toys filled out applications and were screened by the Salvation Army.
