Christmas is now just one week away. But Christmas came early today for some of the most popular animals at the Erie Zoo, the orangutans.
Keepers stuffed about 10 boxes full of the favorite foods of the animals, and some items they can play with including towels, blankets and shredded paper. The keepers say the presents are certainly fun and entertaining for the primates. But also important to help them keep their natural foraging skills keen, and use their intelligence.
Adults Joe and Dasa were joined by their 3 year old son Ollie, in ripping open the presents and having fun with the contents, boxes and wrapping paper.
Zoo Director Scott Mitchell said, "It's like a group of 9 year olds opening packages, although I will say they are much more neat with the wrapping paper
Keeper Kim Gaspar said, "They are just like kids. they are really excited. They can't wait to see what is inside of everything."
Some of the treats in the presents included fruit, fruit rollups, cereal and graham crackers. All consumed in a short time.
