Elderly man & his dog rescued from fire

Posted: Updated:

People who live on Buckeye street in Toledo woke up in the middle of the night to commotion.  Fire trucks lined the street after a home in the 3300 block caught fire.

Courtney Brewer, who lives next door said, "We were laying down and we had the window cracked and we smelled smoke."

Brewer ran outside, saw the billowing smoke and called 911.

"I tried to nock on the door, budge the door, but I couldn't get it opened," she said.

When firefighters got to the scene, they searched the house and found a man in his 80s in one of the bedrooms.

Lieutenant Matthew Hertzfeld with the Toledo Fire Department said, "he still had a pulse, but was unconscious and transported to St. V's."

Crews also rescued a small dog and successfully resuscitated it at the scene.

The fire department is still investigating a cause.  They say the fire started in the basement causing minor damage.  However, it did produce a lot of smoke.  Investigators say there were no smoke detectors in the house.

"As we approach the end of the year we're under 10 fire deaths and we'd like to keep it that way," Hertzfeld said.  "Smoke detectors can help do that as we go into the new year."

While fire fighters try to determine what happened, neighbors, friends and family are hoping for a speedy recovery.

"He's a real good man," Brewer said.

At this time there is no official word on the mans condition.  Family members told 13abc Friday morning he was in critical condition.

If you or someone you know needs smoke detectors, the Toledo Fire Department gives free ones to all Toledo residents.
