Local Red Cross official helps with Sandy relief

Posted: Updated:

The storm is long passed, but there's a lot of hard work needed to put things back together on the East Coast after Superstorm Sandy.

Todd James, Executive Director of the Hancock County Red Cross is making his second trip east to help out with those relief efforts.

James went to New Jersey just days after the storm hit to help with evacuations. This time, he'll serve as the manager of the public affairs team at the Greater New York Regional Headquarters.

He says disaster relief at such a massive scale takes a lot of coordination. "Recovery from a disaster like this can take weeks, months, even years in some cases. You have thousands that lost their homes, blocks, neighborhoods and in some cases, entire cities."

The Red Cross still has nearly 16,000 trained workers along the East coast to assist the more than 93,000 families affected by the storm.

James will be reporting back to the Hancock County Red Cross during his deployment. The chapter will be sharing his reports on its Facebook page.
