Troopers plan for extra patrols during NYE weekend

Posted: Updated:

Drive sober or get pulled over: it's a common message, but a necessary reminder this time of the year as millions hit the roads for the holidays.

"We arrest impaired drivers on a daily basis and that's what we'll do this weekend also," says Sgt. Brian Foltz with Ohio State Highway Patrol.  "Ultimately if you feel you're impaired, don't get behind the wheel."

This dash cam video shows a suspected drunk driver hitting a state trooper on Interstate 270 just this week.  The officer wasn't injured, but the crash highlights the dangers to all passengers of driving under the influence.

"It's better to get a taxi or use a service than get behind the wheel and possibly face consequences of an OVI arrest," the trooper tells 13abc.

It's not just law enforcement taking extra precaution.  Abco Services volunteers will tow intoxicated drivers and their cars from any commercial establishment in the greater Toledo area to their home.   It's a service they provide at no charge, but volunteers will accept tips.  They do it in hopes of preventing accidents for all passengers.

"We will give free rides on New Year's just like we have the past 12 years," says Matt Zimmerman, one of the managers.

"We understand that New Years is a time where people go out and have fun. If you drink too much, don't drive home. Give us a call and we'll give you a ride."

Officers and volunteers want drivers to remember their options this New Year's Eve.  Having a drink for the new year isn't a crime, but getting behind the wheel after you do puts everyone in danger.

"Do whatever you need to do except get behind the wheel impaired," recommends Sgt. Foltz.

If you need a ride with Abco, you can call their dispatch number at 419-536-6123.  And if you're out and see a suspected impaired or unsafe driver, you can reach highway patrol by dialing #677.
