TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A federal board has given a setback to groups
opposing the renewal of a license for the Davis-Besse nuclear plant.
The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board rejected 2 of
the groups arguments including their contention that cracks found last
year in a concrete shell stand in the way of allowing the plant along
Lake Erie from operating safely.
The Blade newspaper in Toledo says the ruling found that the group didn't have evidence
backing their claim that the cracks are related to the structure's age.
Operators of the plant near Toledo say the cracks
trace back to a 1978 blizzard when wind, rain and a temperature drop
caused moisture to penetrate the concrete shell.
FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. is seeking a 20-year license extension for Davis-Besse.
