Michigan Tech Huskies captured their first MacInnes Cup

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT - The Michigan Tech Huskies captured their first MacInnes Cup in 32 years on Sunday evening, defeating the Western Michigan Broncos by a score of 4-0 in the championship match of the 2012 Great Lakes Invitational in front of 14, 719 college hockey fans at Joe Louis Arena. Earlier in the day, Michigan earned a 5-2 win over Michigan State in the tournament's Third-Place Game.

Michigan Tech goalie Pheonix Copley recorded his second straight shutout in Sunday's title-clinching victory, finishing his first career GLI with 70 saves on as many shots faced in backstopping his team to consecutive wins over the Wolverines and Broncos. Copley is the first netminder in the 48-year history of the GLI to have held opponents scoreless over the course of the entire tournament.

This is the tenth time Michigan Tech has won the MacInnes Cup overall. The Huskies have served as the GLI's host team every winter since the event's inception in 1965.
