Southern California beats Dayton 63-61 in overtime

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eric Wise scored a season-high 19 points and Aaron Fuller added 12 points as USC defeated Dayton 63-61 in overtime Sunday night.

Fuller scored the go-ahead points on free throws and put back a miss for a 59-55 lead. Jio Fontan completed a three-point play on a spin move near the free throw line to make it 62-58, and the Trojans (5-8) held on for their second win in nine games.

The Flyers (9-4) had the last shot, but Kevin Dillard's shot 3-point shot was wide left. Dillard led Dayton with 13 points, and Devin Oliver had 11 points, 12 rebounds.

Wise was ejected after he received two technical fouls at 5:29 of the second half.

USC took a 53-51 lead with about 6 seconds left in the second half when Fontan scored. Dayton came out of a timeout, and Dillard fed Oliver for a layup as time expired on a play that was reviewed and upheld.

Both teams had chances to break a 51-51 tie, but USC's J.T. Terrell missed two free throws and Dillard missed a 3-point attempt that was rebounded by USC with 33.4 seconds remaining.

Dayton pulled to within one point three times in the second half before Oliver tied it at 51 on Dayton's first 3-pointer of the game with 2:43 left. The Flyers had gone 0 for 9 and were in danger of having their 129-game streak of at least one 3-pointer made snapped.

Dillard, Dayton's leading scorer, was guarded by Fontan and held to 1 of 10 from the field but made 11 of 12 free throw attempts.

The Flyers, second in the Atlantic 10 with a 47-percent field goal percentage, shot 34.5 percent.

Wise made two free throws for a 37-27 lead early in the second half before Dayton began to chip away. He scored the final five points of the first half, on a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, to give USC a 27-20 lead at the break.

Dayton pulled to 22-20 with a 6-0 run out of a timeout, the closest it would get in the final 10 minutes of the first half. The Flyers shot only 31 percent in the first half and committed 10 turnovers.

Dewayne Dedmon gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the first half at 22-14 with a crowd-pleasing one-handed dunk off Wise's assist.

Fuller made his second straight start as USC again opted for a three-forward lineup instead of 7-foot-2 Omar Oraby at center. Fuller's 12 points were a season high, and he grabbed 10 rebounds.

It was the first meeting between the teams.

Former USC guard and Philadelphia 76er Nick Young attended the game.
